Essentially it is designed to ease much of the anger, guilt and frustration felt by so many caught up in the emotion of it all and is a sensible and practical guide designed to not only get people back on their feet as fast as possible, but to also challenge them to consider new possibilities in their family and personal relationships. It allows them to finish the fight and consider there may be an opportunity to live in harmony with their ex partner and to put the happiness and health of the children before their own pain and conflict. So many of us forget that even though we cannot be together anymore and may be in new relationships, we are still a family and nothing changes that.Much of the book deals with making sure the children are ok. It forces people to face their own possible errors in judgement in the way that they have dealt with the children and ensures parents are well prepared for any possible behavioural backlash that may surface in a child who is in deep pain over what has happened to themselves and the people they love.We look at getting personal finances in order. Divorce ultimately creates enormous financial pain for most families. Houses and other assets are divided, along with the cost of moving and creating new expenses. Add to that the legal costs and people can end up in real financial trouble very quickly. The chapter on personal finances breaks new ground in the questions it asks the reader to answer about their feelings on money and their ability to get things in order financially. It enables us to confront the real numbers and get a plan in place to immediately get the family’s finances back in order quickly.Ultimately though, this book is about helping the reader to decide it is time to heal and start living the life they dreamed of when they were a child. Whilst we address how to develop new relationships as a healthy single parent, more importantly it is about the relationship with self. We look heavily at the lessons we seem to relive over and over again and address the importance of true happiness with yourself and the desire to be so much more than you thought you could be.All of this practical and sensible information is irrelevant though, if we are unable to address what really led us to this point in our life. It asks us to confront who we really are and who will we become on this journey. Some of our actions are painful to recall, however when we discover we have the courage and the will to make a better life for ourselves, it becomes an uplifting and joyous experience. This is not a book to be read and put on the shelf, but a book to be lived – it should be dog-eared, written in, points highlighted, pages marked for future reference, possibly tear stained and definitely looking worn by the time you get to the point where you don’t need it anymore. It should be read and reread until you feel able to give up the past mistakes and regrets and the painful experiences that keep showing up for you and truly feel you have started on a new journey – a journey of faith, great hope and anticipation of the person and parent you know is living in you just below the surface, the one who has truly found the freedom to experience joy again. That is your new possibility now.
